PERSONAL INTEREST
"I have never been very interested in fishing, hunting or sports. Yes, I know, it's a little unusual, especially for a guy who currently lives in Louisiana, the "Sportsman's
Paradise". But since I was a young boy, I've enjoyed studying. I haven't been interested in fictional but rather non-fictional material and, at the age of 13, discovered the
depths and practical applications of the Bible. I have spent my life learning what I could about who God is and what our relationship with Him should be. The links below are
materials I've presented through the years, now collected into a single class currently being taught at my local congregation. They are posted here in hopes they will help the
reader find a deeper understanding of himself/herself and more clearly see the great love our Father has for His children. To that end, may His name be glorified in all things."

Lesson 1 Introduction: This introductory course is designed to encourage the study to regularly attend, pray for the class and recognize when anchors are pointed out
to help them avoid drifting or "being blown by every wind of doctrine".
Lesson 2 Synoptic Gospels: The synoptic gospels portray Jesus' ministry from three separate and distinct perspectives so all three are needed to fully understand who
He was and what He is accomplishing in the life of a Christian.
Lesson 3 Faith and Repentance: Both faith and repentance of things we practice every day in our Christian walk. Let's talk about the three distinct elements (meanings) of "faith" and how "repentance" becomes a part of our efforts to please the Lord.
Lesson 4 Confession and Baptism: After we're baptized, we continue to follow God's direction and confess that to other. Our confession is actually described as our "profession" as contrasted to the "denial" of truth we see in so many people. This class will help us better understand what it means to "say the same thing".
Lesson 5 Your New Relationship: Sometimes it takes a while for us to see the value in staying connected to our new spiritual family. Remember that the wolf always looks for the straying lamb. Having a family of brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers (as Jesus said) is one of the greatest benefits to us in times of need. Let's not ignore the many ways God described this relationshp... it's a powerful study
Lesson 6 Satan, the Deceiver: Satan has been a liar from the beginning but we are told how he uses these lies to undermine our commitment to the Lord. Don't be deceived, God is not mocked and whatever we sow, we will also reap.
Lesson 7 Survey Book of John: Unlike the Synoptic Gospels, the Book of John was written to a wide-ranging audience and shows Jesus as both the Suffering Servant (Roman appeal) and the King of the Jews (Jewish appeal).
Lesson 8 Counting the Cost: Several years ago, I went to do an IAQ assessment on a 12K sqft home that was still under construction but stalled because the owner ran out of money. Just as Jesus said, if you can't afford to finish, don't get started. As a new Christian, have you considered what serving Him COULD cost you?
Lesson 9 The Unique Word of God: "Evidence That Demands a Verdict", by Josh McDowell, provides credible evidence to support the idea that the Bible is unique and has more evidence that other generally accepted secular documents like Homer's Iliad, Aristotle or Plato.
Introduction - Hebrews 11.1 defines the word "faith" in a very specific way. Verse 6 tells us that it is impossible to please God without possessing this kind of
faith. Understanding the meaning of faith, as it is defined here, helps put the examples that follow in a completely different light and challenges us to meet this very high
standard. This lesson will explain how the word "faith" is used in the context of Hebrews 11 and suggest ways we could demonstrate that faith in our own lives. https://vimeo.com/363972735
History of the churches of Christ
Who are We? Part 1 - The lessons begin with an overview of the history of mankind as it is recorded in the Bible. The thread which permeates each account is God's
loving kindness toward those who would seek Him first above all else. It traces the accounts which demonstrate God's saving of a remnant of those who are committed to His cause,
desiring a personal relationship with Him. https://vimeo.com/278014591
Who are We? Part 2 - The second lesson finishes up the overview of the history of mankind and begins a series of lesson with an overview of the history of the
Christian church from the time of Christ to the present. Observations are made in regards to man's tendency to digress and move into apostacy. https://vimeo.com/278033053
Who are We? Part 3 - This lesson discusses the impact of the Roman Catholic church and the Great Schism and leading up to the Reformation Movement. Emphasis is made on
God's protecting and preserving His remnant. https://vimeo.com/278148465
Who are We? Part 4 - This lesson discusses the Reformation Movement and the development of Protestantism. https://vimeo.com/278134874
Who are We? Part 5 - This lesson begins the discussion of the American Restoration Movement. Much of the material is based on the writings of Ed Harrell who separates
the period between the life of its originators, Barton W. Stone and the Campbells, and the present into four phases, each with unique characteristics but common problems.
https://vimeo.com/278145389
Who are We? Part 6 - This lesson begins a discussion of the first phase, 1836-1966, while many of the originators of the movement were still alive. https://vimeo.com/278221323
Who are We? Part 7 - This lesson continues the discussion of the period between 1866-1906 which concludes with the church of Christ being identified as a completely
separate group from the Christian Church and the Disciples of Christ. At this point we introduce the next phase, 1906-1960. https://vimeo.com/278838692
Who are We? Part 8 - This lesson begins the discussion of the period between 1906-1960, by the end of this period, the Christian Church and Disciples of Christ split
into two separate groups and the Churches of Christ began serious debates over the institutional questions. https://vimeo.com/277919265
Who are We? Part 9 - This lesson wraps up the time period ending in the 1960s and beginning the split in the Churches of Christ as a result of the controversy
surrounding the colleges. Even though many churches had been supporting parachurch organizations, the college issue apparently became the lightening rod to question the value
and scriptural basis for such organizations resulting in the beginnings of a permanent split between the main stream and non-institutional groups emerged. https://vimeo.com/278970730
Who are We? Part 10 - This lesson covers 1971+ regarding Carl Ketcherside and his emphasis on grace/fellowship, broadening the acceptance of like-minded brethren even
though there are differences in practice. We also discuss the development of the International Church of Christ as the final outgrowth of the Crossroads and Boston Movements to
answer the problems of a lack of evangelism and close personal relationships. https://vimeo.com/280111938
Who are We? Part 11 - With an emphasis on the fact that most movements are the result of a reaction to either a perceived abuse or neglect experienced by the founder
of the movement, this lesson covers 1989+ and the impact that C.A. Holt had on the discussion about the ekklesia being an organism rather than an organization. https://vimeo.com/281381099
Who are We? Part 12 - In John: The Gospel of Belief, Tenny has an excellent explanation of the differences between union, uniformity, unanimity and unity. Jesus
prayed for unity but what does that look like in a body where differences must be respected? https://vimeo.com/282240724
General Topics
Name of the church, Part 1 - Do we fall, because of cultural pressures, into the trap of looking like a denomination because we denominate ourselves with an exclusive
name? To pick a generic description and isolate it then turn it into a unique name representing a specific set of doctrines violates the principles of following the pattern and
being expedient. We begin exposing the errors associated with such a practice. https://vimeo.com/286091850
Name of the church, Part 2 - We should seriously consider the way we are viewed by the very people we are trying to save. If we hold out a denominational hook, we will
catch denominational fish. Following the New Testament pattern as closely as we can will help us avoid the pitfalls of looking, sounding and acting like just another
denomination. https://vimeo.com/287297944Worksheet for this lesson
The Concept of Worship - Some would look at what they are doing, go to the Bible and try to find a passage that justifies it. A better approach would be to go into the
scriptures, look at what the New Testament church did when it was collectively gathered together and do it. To say that everything we do is worship misunderstands the basic
meaning of the word and the purpose that should be involved. If we think worship is just when we gather together on Sunday morning for the communion at the building, we've
ignored what Jesus told the woman at the well. This lesson explores the real meaning of worship and how it relates to the serve we perform as a "living sacrifice", Rom. 12.1
https://vimeo.com/287942932Worksheet for this lesson
Women Speaking in the Assemblies - This is a simple subject, which we tend to complicate, if we understand the meaning of the words used in I Tim. 2 and 1 Cor. 14.
Instead of making rules that are contrary to the scriptures, let's consider what they are telling us about how we should act when "we all come together." https://vimeo.com/293754218Worksheet for this lesson
Discipleship in the Gospel of John
INTRODUCTION (Part 1) - Overview of the book including a variety of ways to study through the book. https://vimeo.com/364862096
INTRODUCTION (Part 2) - Jesus took a motley crew of twelve unlovable and taught them to think like Him. He was so effective that, in less than three years, He was
ready to leave them to carry on the work He began. We want to examine, in this thirteen-week session, how Jesus was able to transform these carnal men into men of faith.
https://vimeo.com/366293188
TRUE FREEDOM/SERVITUDE - Jesus is the Truth and the truth will make you free, but that freedom demands bondage. What an irony that to be free, regarding one thing,
requires bondage regarding another. https://vimeo.com/367857091
ENJOYING ETERNAL LIFE NOW - We talk about eternal life as if it were only a goal for the future. Jesus, however, talked about it as if we possess it now. How can that
be? Coming Soon!
TRUE SIGHT WITH TRUE LIGHT - Jesus is the illuminating force in our lives. From what darkness has He delivered us? https://vimeo.com/375579235
TRUE JUDGMENT - Jesus taught that judging after the flesh is sinful. But how am I to fulfill the command to judge things in the flesh? https://vimeo.com/379786517
TRUE LOVE - Is loving as God loves merely a goal for which we strive, or can we have it perfectly? https://vimeo.com/377079066
LIVE IN A SPIRITUAL WORLD - It is difficult to live in a physical world and understand spiritual concepts. In fact, we tend to materialize our religion to the
exclusion of the Spirit. Jesus helps us to think in spiritual terms. https://vimeo.com/382985065
BEARING FRUIT - In the book of John, converts are never called "fruits". Jesus said that fruit-bearing is a character-building process. We'll see how that works.
https://vimeo.com/385303608
PROMOTING UNITY - Am I causing division and not even aware of it because I think unity of mind and judgment is impossible? Jesus says it is possible. https://vimeo.com/385304642
TRUE WORSHIPPERS - True worshippers are those who thirst for righteousness. Some of us just need to be motivated to thirst. We've been quenched years ago and feel
comfortable enough to stop seeking. Jesus wants a seeker. https://vimeo.com/387786835
JOYFUL IN FAITH - The nature of joy and faith appear somewhat different in John than in other writings. Joy is found in "Jesus' day" while faith is seen to be a "work
of God". We'll look at both. https://vimeo.com/385305932
TO GOD BE THE GLORY - Jesus' life was characterized by giving the glory to the Father. "Not my will but Thine be done." How can we mimic Jesus and, in our language,
and life give God the glory in everything? https://vimeo.com/389874403
A Study of 1 Corinthians
Lesson 1 - Why People Reject The Gospel. It is not about their intelligence, their pedigree or their family but it's about their heart. Paul starts his letter by
telling the Corinthians what was unique about them and their response to God's truth. This is how he introduces his letter and how we introduce the study. https://vimeo.com/465801383
Lesson 9 - Sexual immortality is more pervasive and accepted in our culture than ever in my lifetime. God has a lot to say about the use of the body and the deadly
consequences, both spiritually and physically, or how we misuse it. Walk this I Corinthians 6.12-20 and better understand the nine (9) reasons Paul shows that ungodly sexual
activity, in any form, is harmful to the participants. https://vimeo.com/493596616
Lesson 10 - The world has some very strange ideas about "separation" and how it is a solution to marriage problem. Paul is not convinced and lays out a framework of
conditions under which separation might take place. When separation occurs, we tempt the very reasons why we got married in the first place so staying together to solve our
differences is always better than being separated. There are exceptions, I suppose, but they are not listed in this text. https://vimeo.com/495355715
Lesson 11 - Establishing Biblical Authority is not magical or restricted to how we interpret what God has told us to do. We use our reasoning power in the same way all
of the time and this lesson will help lay a foundation for better understanding 1 Corinthians, in general, and 1 Corinthians 7 in particular. Walk through the process of
determining how to understand what God wants us to do. https://vimeo.com/496743043
Lesson 13 - I Corinthians 7 is a great place to see how using the context helps define the directive. In this section it will become clear what principles should be
applied to our circumstances and what directives were specific to the "present distress" in the Corinthian culture. Understanding these concepts will make it easier to extract
lessons to follow in regards to the head covering, women speaking and giving. https://vimeo.com/501909260
Lesson 14a - This chapter, 1 Corinthians 8, has been improperly used to keep the church collective from doing scriptural things which would be effective in spreading
the gospel and, as a result of these unlearned brethren, resulted in division. Understanding the principles taught here, as they effect the relationship between brethren, can
produce a kind of unity that will speak positively to the world around us and come closer to fulfilling Jesus' prayer for unity. https://vimeo.com/506864010
Lesson 14b - It is imperative that we understand how to apply this passage in our relationship with brethren. The weak should not use this passage as a hammer to get
their own way and the strong must consider what actions might truly "offend", that is, cause their brother to commit some sin. Let's explore the practical side of the lessons
taught herein. https://vimeo.com/506860394
Lesson 15 - Being in the game and on the right team is important but not as important as being righteous on the right team. If we intend to succeed and make heaven our
home, each of us will be responsible for our own actions and striving toward being the best we can be to mimic Christ. Paul gave us much to save a few but never forgot that
saving himself was the most important goal. https://www.vimeo.com/510009891
Lesson 16 - I Corinthians 10 helps us understand the power of the Israelite's example of seeing the blessings of God before them and yet denying Him in the way they
lived. The lesson is strong and teaches us to appreciate what God has done for us by the way we live for Him. https://vimeo.com/512758611
Lesson 17a - The lesson of 1 Corinthians 11 is sometimes obscured by discussions surrounding the cultural practice of wearing a veil. The directive on the head
covering may well have implications and applications in our culture but the more important lesson to be learned from this chapter is the lesson of headship. God established a
clear line of authority for each of us and only by living as we've been designed can we find the fulfillment, happiness and freedom He intends us to have. https://vimeo.com/515303558
Lesson 17b - This is the conclusion to the lesson "the covering". After defining the terms, this lesson takes us through the why, who, what, when and where so we can
better understand what principles are being taught and how to apply them. https://vimeo.com/519654232
Lesson 18 - There is much controversary surrounding the use of our church buildings. That didn't come about until after the Council of Laodicea (3rd Century) because
the early church did not own buildings but, rather, met in houses. The lessons from I Corinthians 11.17-34 have nothing to do with WHERE we eat but HOW we eat. The Lord's Supper
was instituted inside the context of a meal where Jesus identified specific elements and given specific import. This lesson will help us focus on the true meaning of the Lord's
Supper and it's value as a sharing (or communion) of the saints. https://vimeo.com/520683993
Lesson 19 - Paul begins this discussion in 1 Corinthians 12, covering three chapters, with the source of all spiritual gifts being the Holy Spirit. Instead of causing
division, this should unify the saints by understanding that the body has many members and each member is important to the proper functioning of the body. https://vimeo.com/527591355
Lesson 20 - The famous chapter on love challenges the student to think about love as an action rather than feeling. We will take a look at how love is demonstrated
through action and how we, as Christians, should be characterized by the powerful quality. https://vimeo.com/533372354
Lesson 21a - Part 1 of this class on 1 Corinthians 14 highlights the words, phrases and reasons for the restrictions and instructions surrounding the use of spiritual
gifts. We're introducing the most salient point of this lesson: when and where should these restrictions/instructions be applied. By understanding this, the general principles
may then be applied to our time and our services. https://vimeo.com/535650510
Lesson 21b - Part 2 of this lesson covers the details and definitions of "silent" and "speak" as they are presented in 1 Corinthians 14. This passage is not difficult
to understand when put in its native context. When spiritual gifts are exercised in the public assembly, these restrictions/instructions apply. The general principles may be
applied every time the church is gathered together in one place. https://vimeo.com/544411827
Lesson 22a - Part 1 of a study on 1 Corinthians 15, testimony to and a description of the bodily resurrection. YOUR faith is a testimony to the veracity of the bodily
resurrection because you're accepted the evidence. https://vimeo.com/549053347
Lesson 22b - Part 2 of this study continues to cover and complete the first 11 verses of 1 Corinthians 15. As we've established that the Christian's faith becomes a
testimony to the veracity of the bodily resurrection, this section suggests two more proofs: the Old Testament prophesies and the New Testament eye-witnesses. https://vimeo.com/554940785
Lesson 23 - We continue our study of 1 Corinthians 15 by talking about the power of the resurrection. Of special significance in this section is the discussion
regarding the eternal nature of Jesus' sacrifice and how the resurrection proves His superiority as King and, ultimate, the brother to his kingdom subjects. https://vimeo.com/557013825
Lesson 24 - This section of 1 Corinthians 15 answers two questions that would inevitably be asked by those who were evaluating the truth of the resurrection: 1) How
will this happen and 2) with what kind of body will we be raised. This lesson makes it clear that God, in His infinite creative wisdom, will be able to create a body of His
choosing, one we cannot even imagine. It will be imperishable, incorruptible, heavenly, and eternal. What a great lesson to remind us that we have a future, and it is in His
hands. https://vimeo.com/562586444
Lesson 25 - This wraps up the discussion of the resurrection from 1 Corinthians 15 with a powerful "THEREFORE". Ending this section with a "so what?" means that we
need to come face to face with the reality that we need to react to the FACT of the resurrection. To ignore it, forget it or teach against it will have dire consequences that
could last an eternity. https://vimeo.com/566081862
Lesson 26 - The instructions given in 1 Corinthians 16 for giving raises interested questions regarding how much, how often and how then should that collected money be
spend. This class examined the collection for the treasury in the context of directions given by Paul to the collective. https://vimeo.com/569132434
Lesson 27 - In the closing paragraphs of I Corinthians 16, Paul takes a opportunity to summarize what we read about his activities in Acts 19. His love for the
brethren is expressed so clearly as he admonishes them to grow up, stand firm and continue in the faith. https://vimeo.com/573524326
Lesson 28 - This is the final lesson on 1 Corinthians and becomes a review of the entire series of lessons. Initially we proposed that this book helps us understand
how to study the scriptures. Using virtually all the basic techniques such as context, cultural influences, word definitions and many more, the book of 1 Corinthians is a great
study within itself. https://vimeo.com/573781693
